Welcome to my Comparative
Literature students.
We are going to start the year
with the myth of the Golden Age. It first appeared in Hesiod's text
The Work and Days in 7th century BC and it is
one of the fundamental myth in western civilization. You need to be
haunted by the myth and to know it almost by heart since we are
going to constantly refer to it during the first two quints. When I
was in Paris, last August, I came across an amazing small book
(published in 2006) by Jean-Pierre Vernant (a expert in Greek
mythologie and Greek civilization) called Pandora, la premiere
femme (Pandora, the first woman). This small book
revolutionized my way of thinking about the myth and I am very
exited to share with you his thoughts on Pandora and therefore on
the Golden Age. See you all on Friday September 9th for our first
